A resource consisting primarily of words for reading. Examples include books, letters, dissertations, poems, newspapers, articles, archives of mailing lists. Note that facsimiles or images of texts are still of the genre Text.
Footnotes

[1] In other letters by Joseph Post it was common for him to list the place he was currently residing. This word is likely a town name, though upon consulting a list of towns in New York no name was found that seemed to match the difficult to read letters.

[2] Amy Post, born Amy Kirby, the wife of Isaac Post and Joseph's mother. She was born December 20, 1802, making her 41 at the time of this letter.

[3] Most likely referring to William R. Hallowell and Mary H. Post, who had married a year prior in 1843. The couple lived in Rochester, New York. Mary was the daughter of Isaac Post and his first wife, Hannah Kirby, making her a half sibling of Joseph. Ibid.

[4] A town in Long Island, New York. The birth place of Isaac Post and also home to his brother Joseph Post and his wife Mary Robbins Post. Ibid.

[5] Seeing as the trip was to Westbury where members of the Post family lived, this is probably referring to Joseph's paternal grandmother, Catherine Willets Post. Ibid.

[6] An Uncle Willet and Aunt Matilda are mentioned in a letter written by Joseph's older brother Jacob Kirby Post to their mother. Uncle Willet may be related to the family through Isaac Post's mother whose maiden name was Willets. Post, Jacob Kirby, “Post, Jacob Kirby.

[7] Possibly the Henry Willets mentioned in a letter from Joseph's aunt to Mary Robbins Post to Willet E Post, Joseph's younger brother. If so, Uncle Henry is likely related to the family through Joseph's paternal grandmother. Post, Mary Robbins, “Post, Mary Robbins.

[8] Joseph and his brothers Jacob and Willet went to school away from home and would write to their parents while they were away. .

[9] Further identity unknown. Not written of in any of the currently transcribed letters and a genealogical search of the name and year of death date provided no further leads. Possibly a relative of abolitionist and Post family correspondent Aaron M. Powell. Ibid.

[10] John Plumer is also mentioned in a 1853 letter by Joseph Post. John is likely a Quaker man as the 1853 letter notes that Joseph and the people he was traveling with missed hearing John Plumer when their wagon turned over. He is perhaps a poor speaker since someone named Catherine claims “it was not much of a loss” to miss the service. John married before the writing of the 1853 letter and bought land and built a house on money lent to him by someone of the name of LJ Underhill. “Post, Joseph..

<[11] It is likely that he is a Quaker seeing as he spoke at the funeral. A man named W Hicks is mentioned in a letter from Joseph Post to his father which mentions that he at risk of being disowned for an unmentioned reason. “Post, Joseph.

[12] Most likely Matilda Post, daughter of Isaac and Amy post who was born in 1840. She dies sometime in 1844 or 1845, not long after this letter. Ibid.

[13] acob Post is Joseph's older brother. He was born November 11, 1829 making him 14 at the time of this letter. Ibid.

[14] Joseph W. Post was one of the many children of Isaac and Amy Post. He was born in 1832, making him 11 or 12 years old when writing this letter to his mother. Joseph's mother was 29 or 30 when he was born. Ibid.

[15] A common name making it difficult to identify. Someone with the name of Samuel does write to Amy Post and inquires about the health of the family meaning that it could possibly be this individual with an unidentified last name. _____, Samuel, “_____, Samuel.

Annotations
In this handwritten letter, an adolescent Joseph Post writes to his mother, Amy Post, about various recent events. The letter provides a summary of the day-to-day experiences that a boy in 1844 would find noteworthy though it does not go into much detail for any particular topic. He writes of agricultural activities such as caring for oxen and picking apples. He writes of his own travel to Westbury as well as his uncle's planned trip to New York with several other people. Joseph anticipates starting school soon which explains why he is away from his family. He also writes of going to the well attended funeral of someone named Edmund Powell. Joseph ends the letter hoping that his family is well and hopes that he will return to them in the springtime.
