Mr. Horace Stone
My Very Dear Sir
From what I wrote in my
last communication to you and also to Richard you
had reason to believe that I would have called at Castile
& Mount Morris before this time. But from causes mostly
beyond my Controll [sic] I have not bin [sic] able to carry out
my wishes. About the middle of April p----- [illegible] I left home
Went to Jefferson County on business & from thence went
across the Lake to Kingston then to Bath, Pitkin, Cob
ourg, [sic] Port Hope, Wellington Hill, Toronto and finally
to Hamilton – Canada West, from thense [sic] on my way
back had intended to have called on you & Richard
but from the fact of having bin [sic] weather bound and
subjected to much loss of time aded [sic] to having run my
time, indused [sic] me to make the best of my way home
after having turned the corner, and must content myse
=lf [sic] with the expectation that I will be able to redeem
my pledge hereafter. I have my Dear Sir by no means lost
my confidence either in you or Leonard as to the payment
of the note, but am well aware that we are in a World
that is Subject to many Vicisitudes [sic] & know very little what
awaits us in futer [sic] life. Consequently after the recept [sic] of
your last Wrote all the other drawers of the note, but have
only heard I believe from one of them, at which I am
only left to Wonder, I have again written Judge Turner [?]
Mr Bruce [?] but get no reply. It [illegible] certainly gave me
much pain to be compelled to fear from the purport of
your last letter that you might be compelled to suffer for
the want of that assistance which it was and is not in my
power to render, but could not doubt but that you wou
ld [sic] be able to find [?] some friend that would be able to
render you any assistance you might knead [sic]
As to Richard & the family
a long time has Elapsed Since I have heard any thing^^from them, but must say I should be very agreeably disapp-
=ointed [sic] to hear they were all in comfortable circumstances
which I can hardly expect, Richard I presume still
remains [?] on the place & should he in the decline [?] of life
by [3 illegible words] be enabled to attain a comfortable
living how pleased I should be altho I might be the
sufferer [?] you probably as my agent are still permiting [sic]
him to remain on the premises on such terms as you
deem best all things considered. As it is not possible
for me now to tell when I can be at your place I wo
=uld [sic] be pleased if you would write me on the recept [sic]
of this, as to your ability to meet the payment of the
State sum by you & others as also the State of Rich’d
and Family, what use they have made of the funds
left in your hands for them & whether any part rem
ains [sic] unpaid & unexpended, I am fully aware that
I am so Situated that I am compeled [sic] to give you
trouble and perplexity but it seams [sic] unavoidable. But
my Dear Sir we shall soon have run our race, all
will soon be over with us --- crops of Wheat in your
place will probably be fine, but in this county very
poor, & our friends & acquaintance in this Section
and also Richards all in usual health –
Elsie Mariah (Mrs Wilbur) [?] has a
nother [sic] little Whig, James [?] & Eveline are momentarily
expecting one
Truly your friend
John Van Valkinburgh
At the above Date I wrote thus far and laid the paper
aside supposing I might wish to add a word and
until this moment have not bin [sic] able to re assume the
task that lies before me altho I have frequently attemp
=ted [sic] it for so long my h-- hand is ready to palsie [sic] and my tears [?]
drop but must procede [sic] about the above date Elsie
fell sick, On the 16th was delivered of a fine son was
Quite Smart for a few days but her cough contin-
-ued until the 4th June instant at which time she
became very weak & while Coughing she Ruptured
a Blood Vessel and died instantly in our arms who
could render her no relief, But O God who can describe
the Loss [?] thus you see my Dear Sir, the pride of my life
the fond fabrick [sic] on which I had plased [sic] the future of
my declining years has falen [sic] & I am perfectly buried
in its ruins. Her funeral was attended on the 4th
the 8th anniversary of her marriage surrounded by a
more numerous concourse of friends than was ever
witnessed in the Town on such an occasion
Horace, I am Wretched beyond
all description, how shall I surmount the tremendous
affliction – I can say no more
Again farewell
John S. Van Valkinburgh
It would seem from present appearances that Sam
=uel cannot bear up under the affliction wish[es?]
to see no one & keeps his room secluded from the
world.

Chatham Centre New York July 9th, 1839Horace Stone, Esq. My Dear Sir, after an absence of about34 days I arrived at home found my familyin health and domestic concerns as I might expect in a tolerable state of acq------------ [illegible] When I left your hospitable mansionwent direct to Canandaigua to see Mr Greig onthe subject of the little lot of land and staid [sic]over one night as he was absent but he didnot return Ckonsequently I did not see him, Istated the case to the clerk who appeared very unwell [?]he stated that Mr Sheperd had been their [sic] on the subj=ect [sic] some time since This may account for his being so ready to submit the matter to Mr Greighe thought I had better write Mr Greig on the subj=ect [sic] I have done so But I must confess I havesome doubt on the subject of geting [sic] the additional South at least if the Resident lot is conveyed bydeed – no doubt if the South [?] is not added about theliability [?] of Mr Greig, I shall probably soon hear fromMr. G on the subject & will then again write you& refer him to you for any information as my agent in the matter of the place. The man as is said who wished to purchase the place is a MrJeremiah Wilcox of Geneva Cayuga County Ishall write him before I leave my seat and referhim to you & I think all things considered itwill be best to sell the little premises [?] as soon as a fair price can be had for it. I couldwish that a little more than $30 [?] could bee [sic] hadfor it it being near a very thriving little villageI think it might fetch more. But at the least youcan possibly sell it, it cannot be sold betweenthis and fall Should you think best for thefamily I must advance the money comingto their heirs for you to vest for them in Michigan &Indiana. I had intended to have given you aa particular description of the route I took but in
as much as it cannot promote the object and asso much ^time^ necessarily consumed in writing allthe letters I am under the necessity of writing on my return I must content myself in giveing [sic]you ^a^ reference to the places I look at as safe going but you will naturally examine for yourself. first at my Brother Jas’ in the Town of Seaport and Countyof Seaport Indiana -- the Lands is as good as any & I saw the price (all second hand) is from [illegible] to 20 Dollars per acre depending on the state of improvement ---- [illegible] most valuable.)Eugene Griffith Treadway who offered me S----- Grove [?]at $ 11 [?] I offerd him $8. I had much to the west [?] aMr Isaac Capelin [?] he had 120 acres goodlittle House & perhaps 50 acres in [?] ------- [illegible] he willsow 20 or 30 this fall – I think this place can be bought at a bargain in the fall as his Father has sent for him to the South. While there my Brother [sic] James will refer you to all the men andplaces I looked at. The Maccollums [sic] near himhave a fine place and several others that will be sold. in this place are many splendid places that can be had. But for Purchase [?] you only wanta small placeAs to all the Examinations I made at [Toledo?] by the aidof my friend Mr E. Briggs cannot say that I ampleased with that section. The best bargain wasthat of Mr Parker [?] but I do not think that asany of the Land shewed [sic] me by Mr. E. B. would doit being rather low and wet – could be had at$3 per acreLivingston where Solomon lives is the best chanceexcept at Seaport as you will naturally be at that place the family will show you all the land at that place in market and assured me they wouldinterest themselves much between this and fall tofind a good bargain for the family. But the bestbargain in my estimation is a place lying about2 miles east of William Websters which will be abo-ut [sic] 11 miles East of Solomons in the same countyLivingston His name is Patrick Smith has losthis wife 120 acres 20 cleared Small House it canI think be had for $500 cash he asks $600 but by the by you may be assured that lands in Michigan
will not advancevery soon but as the money matters become more &more close the South? Land? will I think ------ mostprudent? holding land particularly now residents areby reason of taxes and other causes wishing tosell. On the subject of Government lands, these prob=ably can now be had at Good Quality short ofgoing back to Eaton [?] again. Clinton and IowaCounties I should like well to be at Michigan--------------- then much land in [Iowa? Iona?] Countycomes in Market The 2 Registers Mr --- and MrsJacob Barns [?]who lives at the Grand rapids orGrand river offered me every assistance if I chose to make a purchase, a man from Cayuga County N. Y. in the stage assured me that recentlymany good lots of G------- W------ S----- wererecently discovered in Eaton and Sugham County It was the opinion of the family on Sat? (Saturday?)that the wisest course would be to purchase a small place where Richard could have a homeand --- the residue in G---------- reserving a sufficiency to aid them in making a beginningAll this you discover is add-------- to you fromthe presumption that you will Examin [sic] for your=self and when on that spot will be the judge asit may be wise for many reasons for Richardto settle in the neighborhood of some branch ofthe family, you will use your discretion in goi-ng [sic ] farther than Michigan but I must think in Quality of [soil?] Indiana (or Seaport) has the advantage I think from the Scarcity of money and theprobable decline of the price & produce the priceof Lands particularly in the new states will dec=line [sic] a little as almost all are deeply in debt I find my sheet is almost full and shurely [?]at least a little space should be occupied intendering to you and through ^you^ to your family mymost hearty thanks and unaffected acknowledge=ments for your great kindness and attention to to me while at your pleasant a------ I am not like someI have known that seem not to Serve their Friends norDislike their Enemies. With this I shurely [sic] send to you & family my best wishes Fare well God bless you John Van Valkinburgh N B Please say to Richard’s family that during my absence the wife of James Peterson [?] (sick when I left)died Gone [?] a little before us[Marginal note running downward between pages 2 and 3]:Horace the Black horses of which I spoke owned at Castile Village 5 years old owned by aMr Van [?] Eyck are not Sold Just mention it if they are as fine as he said did not seethem there only Mr E [?] said they were very fine about the haunches Cole [sic] black switch [?] tails theprice $300 well matched If they are such as he stated they would sell here
