Description

Constance Mitchell moved to Rochester in the 1950s and became ensconced in the Civil Rights Movement. As a political activist, she was involved with the Baden Street Settlement, working with families in the migrant camps and was actively involved with voter registration. During the 1964 response to systemic racial discrimination, Mitchell opened the doors to her own home. It became a gathering place for people such as Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy, leaders of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and the Congress of Racial Equality. “Whenever I’m doing something for people, I feel good, and I feel it’s my duty. I always think, “There but for the grace of God I go.”
