we want to go to the Capitol again if we can, and see the Senate in session, beside a great many other things that I am affeared we shall not be able to see for the want of time. missed to day of seeing Washingtons old church at Alexandria The old slave pen has been repaired sothat we did not see it in its original odiousness and Mr Gladwin did not point out the dismal dark cells around the sides, but pompously shewed the shower bath wehre they punish, sometimes ten min utes at a time, for various misdemeanors, there were in the pen twenty or twenty five prisoners today, our Union soldersi, how my heart acked for them, I have not seen a more pompous pround appearing man than Mr Gladwin, on his beautiful horse gallop ing as fast as a run--about the sheets. He took us to see the Solderis Rest just finished, it very large and contains every convenience and comfort, I said to him, why, it looks as if you were fixing for a life long war, Ah! he said we do not expect an end very soon, it is more likely to last ten or twenty years than one more--I thought it likely he hoped so. We met one Mr Reid, who we saw at Waterloo yester day at the Capiton, no one else yet that I knew

house with the ex slaves here--we were astonished to here what good language they used, though some missplaced words--their voices seemed very melodious both in preaching praying and singing Ann--Georgiana and I are all writing now after twelve o'clock--I will stop and see of any thing comes up to say in the morning--go0dnight

'tho first falling weating since we left Jersey City--ant we are not displeased to give over our visit to Arlington, though sleet and snow is falling fast, we go in the Ambulance, crop the river on a birdy or acquiduct--All here are so kind Mrs. Holt has just said that we were welcom to stay a month or more if we choise, and invited us to go with her and husband to mount Pleasant Hospital, whether Benja min will stay as long as we do I know not, he has found John Mott. I cant get Alexandria out of my mind, the poor contribands, it seems to me that their condition cant be much worse in slave
