such wretched smoking, hovels--not a bit of light-- and then are obliged to pay rent to the government. Oh dear what a state of thing, our noble soldiers too showered and punished so awfully-- Benjamin has come and we have concluded to give up going to Arlington and are going to visit Hospitals
my letters are disjointed I know
you will wonder I dont tell more
but if you were here in our places you
would not I hope you are all well and happy in my absence
love to all--if you could only
all be here to see for your selves--
I wish I could hear from you
besure and have letter at Jersey City by next second or third day--I think we shall not leave here until second day and then whether we shall muster courage to stop to Baltimore I know not--we came through there in dark night, did talk some of going back on the river, but I think not--Isaac do call me and see Amelia--sometimes I thnk of her often
