Hopeman Chimes and Carillon
Hopeman Chimes (1942)
Played by John Rothwell Slater
In 1930, 17 bells were installed in the tower of Rush Rhees Library. The Hopeman Chimes were played regularly by professor of English John Rothwell Slater and Robert F. Metzdorf '33, '39 (PhD), and by student bellmen. Several recordings of the original bells were made, often featuring traditional tunes and University favorites, like The Genesee.
This disc is part of a set of ten albums given by the Alumni Association to Professor Slater on the occasion of his retirement in 1942. As is often the case the weather affects the quality of recordings of the bells, and this was recorded on a windy day.
