Wilson Day (1973)
Wilson Day began in 1973, as a way to celebrate the life of Joseph C. Wilson '31, who died suddenly in November 1971. President W. Allen Wallis noted: "Wilson Day will not be a day of mourning his death, but a day of celebrating his life, a day full of the kinds of things that Mr. Wilson prized about the University: music, art, poetry, science, scholarship, education, research."
The 1973 celebration included a stellar group of writers, physicians, physicists, as shown in the program brochure. The day before the official start of the event, a panel gathered to discuss the meaning of "values."
