About the Digital Exhibit, Then and Now

The online exhibit is based on the physical exhibit, "Gilbert and Sullivan: From London to America," that was on display from October 2, 2004 to March 15, 2005. This exhibit was presented in the Rare Books and Special Collections Library in the University of Rochester Rush Rhees Library (2nd Floor). The exhibition was curated by the collector, Dr. Harold A. "Hal" Kanthor and Mary Huth, then Assistant Director of RBSCP. The original digital exhibit was designed by Melissa Mead.
It should be noted that the orignial exhition featured materials on loan from the vast holdings of Dr. Kanthor. He has since given some of his materials to the library and continues to give portions of the collection to RBSCP on a regular basis. And he has taken on the role of helping to process the collection to make it accessible to researchers. While the lion's share of the collection is still with the donor, he has made it available to researchers, working collaboratively with RBSCP.
In summer and fall of 2020, we took steps to move the rich content from this digital exhibition into the Omeka platform, keeping the same architecture and information, as well as images, but migrating it to a newer platform. This migration was the first of several, and was done collaboratively as part of a larger website migration project.
